SEO Link Baiting - Give Stuff Away

October 8th, 2007 by bill.hutchison · 1 Comment

An almost sure way to generate incoming links and boost your search engine optimization (SEO) to your site is to give stuff away.

Over at Take My Tech the author, Jason Burns, is giving away his old tech gadgets, movies and video games. Since most people are keen to get free stuff the site is generating a lot of incoming links from a lot of different blogs. Jason is even managing to get a few fairly high profile sites to link to him.

The question that I have though, is what will Jason do with the site after he has given his stuff away?

By the time he has given away his free tech stuff he will have probably generated hundreds of incoming links to his site, which is a key thing when working on your Search Engine Optimization (SEO). At that point his page rank should be quite high and he will probably have quite a bit of “Google Juice” going for him. After giving his stuff away he could probably do one of three things:

  1. Build the site into a site that talks about tech related stuff
  2. Sell the site
  3. Redirect the domain to his existing site

Since Jason already has his own site, philoking.com - Computing for the OS Agnostic, which has a page rank of 4, if I was him I would probably be looking at either selling the site or redirecting the domain to his existing site.

Either way Jason is setting himself up for a pretty good windfall for the cost of shipping some gear that he doesn’t even use anymore.

Bill, thanks for the great write up. You are half right. The goal, is to get sponsors to provide items to be given away, offer them advertising, and let them drop ship the items to the winners. That way I can keep the site going, drop the shipping costs out of the equation, and offer top notch items regularly. It’s already started working as we have an an unsolicited sponsored laptop bag on there already. Thanks for helping spread the word!
